September 30, 2021, marks the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day that coincides with Orange Shirt Day. It recognizes the tragic legacy of residential schools, the missing children, the families left behind and the survivors of these institutions.
The picture here means:
- The eagle to represent First Nations
- The narwhal to represent Inuit
- The beaded flower to represent Métis
- The stars to represent the children who never made it home from residential schools
Among the various visual elements illustrating Indigenous cultures, the circle is at the centre, which represents being together in spirit of reconciliation. The orange colour represents truth-telling and healing. The pathway represents the road to reconciliation. First Nations, Inuit and Métis are represented in the image.
On September 28, 2024, Connections Community Services has organized an event for us to come, understand and commemorate the history and legacy of the residential school system. We will honour the resilience, dignity and strength of survivors and intergenerational survivors and remember the children who never came home. It’s a chance to engage and educate us, the newcomers from Hong Kong, about the BC and Canadian colonial history and how it has and continues to impact Indigenous communities.
The event will consist:
10:30am - meet up at the entrance
10:50am - head over to the gym
11:00am - 1:00pm
- Jeannie from Connections sharing her thoughts on Truth and Reconciliation
- Speech from a Residential School survivor
- Indigenous singing and possibly some dancing in between
- Small group sharing / discussions about Indigenous culture and its roots
- Q&A
It would be a great idea to wear something orange, if you have.
Note that there will be photographers taking pictures and filming during the ceremony. If you do not want to be filmed or photographed, please let us know when we meet at the entrance at the beginning at 10:30am on that day.
After the event, we can go grab lunch somewhere nearby.
